CHAPTER TEN
âMrs. Reilly? Would you like me to make you a cup of coffee?â
Stringy gray hair blew around the older womanâs face as she turned to Lexi. âThank you.â
Lexi squatted beside the bed, covering the womanâs hand with her own. âDo you like it with milk and sugar?â
âBlack is fine, no cream or sugar.â
âIâll be right back.â
She returned to the kitchen, glad for the chance to exhale and breathe in some fresher air. Mrs. Reillyâs room could do with a good airing and a deep clean, like much of the rest of the house. But she knew that was something that could be dealt with another time. Right now was all about trying to establish some kind of a bond with this woman who had birthed and raised Jackson and Ellie. So far things seemed to be going well, but having nursed other patients with similar kinds of symptoms, she knew it didnât take long for things to become strained.
She switched on the coffee-maker, then glanced out the window. Jackson and Ellie stood with an older man, the realtor, or so Ellie had assumed before sheâd rushed out, complaining about her brotherâs illogical state. She didnât seem any happier now, standing there with a scowl and crossed arms.
But Jackson had Lexiâs sympathy. Sheâd seen the way heâd looked yesterday, the wash of sadness on his features something she couldnât forget, now seemingly seared onto her heart.
âLucy?â Mrs. Reillyâs faint call came.
Huh? Oh. âComing!â
She filled the mug and added a trace of sugar. Mrs. Reilly was mere skin and bones, like she hadnât eaten properly for weeks. She needed fattening up, and perhaps the sugar would help sweeten her mood.
âHere you go.â She placed the mug on the wooden bedside table, the clutter atop now a little more straightened. She would normally look for a coaster to protect the wood, but the many round dark stains suggested coasters werenât a priority.
âThanks.â Faded blue eyes followed Lexi as she moved around the room to take a seat on the chair. âWho are you again?â
âLexi.â
âJacksonâs girlfriend?â
Lexi choked. âNo, maâam. Iâm Ellieâs friend. And Jacksonâs too, but itâs nothing like that.â
Mrs. Reillyâs chin dipped, but the eyes remained fixed on Lexi. She stared back. She could see a vague resemblance to Jackson in the nose and curly hair, but the eyes were different, more like Ellieâs.
âWould you like me to open the windows?â Lexi took the shrug as acquiescence, and moved to open the windows, taking care to make sure the midday light didnât fall directly on the bed. Truth be told Mrs. Reilly was probably healthy enough to not need to be in bed, but it was obviously where she felt more comfortable. Lexi wasnât about to upset her, not on her first day here. She spent a moment surreptitiously tidying, then moved to the closet. âWould you like me to put these clothes away?â
No answer, which Lexi took as affirmation. She picked up a shirt which would further crease if not hung up, and moved to the closet.
